Year 6 Home Learning - Week Beginning 11.05.2020
So, this week we would be showing the world what we can do through the completion of the year 6 SAT’s! I know how well you would have done and I also know and recognise the hard work and commitment you all put in before the lock down to be as prepared as you could be for the tests themselves. I know that you would have taken them in your stride year 6, it is really important that you all know that we recognise your hard work and commitment even though the tests are not happening!
Your emails to me this week have made me smile! the kind words and the acknowledgement that you have been working hard at home at whatever you have been doing is an inspiration. Thank you.
English
I am still advocating (look it up ;) ) the use of the Oak National Academy. the structure and content follows the national curriculum and this week, instruction writing, can fit nicely in with the work that you have been completing on inventions. Towards the end of this week you will be focusing on the SPAG features important for writing a year 6 standard set of instructions.
Incidentally (another good word), (and a comma after an ly sentence opener, do you see?) keep an eye out for foundation lessons that either interest you, or that cover work that we have already done in class - the Animal Kingdoms lesson for example, will fit nicely into work that we have previously completed on Carolus Linnaeus when looking at classification.
By following the English on the Oak National Academy website, you will complete both reading and spelling activities that link with your instruction writing genre. Please remember the year 5/6 spelling words as a base for what to be learning and applying in your writing.
Check out spelling frame for work relating to the year 5/6 spelling words, there are also pages linked to the 3/4 spelling words if you are currently brushing up on these. It would be very useful if you would spend time this week looking at the spelling rules 48-52 (year 5/6 words) which link to homophones.
Maths
White Rose Maths have slightly changed the way that they are releasing work. The video tutorials will still be available, however, please find the worksheets linking to week 4 below (with answers). The topic for this week is fractions, multiplication and division thereof.
If you would like a challenge this week, head on over to the nrich website and take a look at some fractions problems, some include:
Fractions in a box - some of you have seen this one before.
If you like the nrich style of thinking and exploring maths, by all means check out some of their home learning on their ‘Maths at Home’ Pages.
Science
Linking back to Darwin, Evolution and inheritance, please follow this link to a lesson linking with ‘Alien Shapes.’ Other investigations and exploratory investigations you can complete around this subject this coming week include:
DISCLAIMER: The Explorify website where this work is found may ask for you to sign up, as far as I am aware this is free and the above activities are free to access. It is worth signing up as the activities are thought provoking and set up in an easily deliverable way. If you have any trouble accessing this please let me know and I will try to help or arrange for alternative work.
